Films that made a difference
When counterculture novelist, Ken Kasey wrote One flew over the cuckoo's nest he created a character named Randle Patrick McMurphy literally. Played impeccably by Jack Nicholson who makes this film dance with intense highs and brutal lows. The film itself is bipolar. With a back up cast from Heaven and a Antagonist from Hell. It all fits in this 1975 Academy Award winning best picture drama that made me want to run from the Theater like Chief ran from the institution.
This film was my inspiration to pursue an education in the Arts. As a high school student in 1975 I had no idea a film could touch one’s soul and spirit in such a way. I went on to portray Nurse Ratched in a College production of the same. It was difficult not to get sucked up by that tyrant character of dishonor.
A brief synopsis without spoilers goes like this: A small time thief gets a jail sentence but thinks it would be easier to pretend to be crazy and instead is institutionalized with a group of people who absolutely need a dose of him. As a fun loving free spirit and a playfully carefree guy he takes the mixed matched group on wild adventures. Unfortunately, their lives are overseen by an inhumane dictator of a Nurse who makes sure to do things her way, at any and all cost.
